McCafe by Barista

McDonald's has started a chain of stores called McCafe by Barista to directly go up against the big coffee shop chains. While regular McDonald's offers McCafe coffees, as the name implies, McCafe by Barista will offer coffee prepared by a barista. The menu looks very similar to a Starbucks or Tully's, but the prices are just about half way between McCafe in McDonald's stores and coffee at a Starbucks. With the recent additions of stores in Osaka and Toyama Prefecture to the original two stores in Tokyo, there are now 4 total.

Kirin Mets Cola with Functional Claim‏

Kirin touts its Mets Cola as the first cola with a FOSHU functional food claim. The product contains water soluble, difficult to digest dextrins which inhibit the adsorption of fats in the digestive tract. The ads show people drinking this while eating fatty meals. So far this product has been one of the big hits in the FOSHU functional food area. It is also an interesting example of a company other than Coca Cola or Pepsi getting a foothold in the cola market. This is a low calorie drink, not a zero calorie drink, but the taste is somewhat between Diet Coke and Coke Zero, and the pricing is a little more, 160 yen/500 ml vs 150 yen/500 ml for most carbonated drinks.
