Kirin claims its Tanrei W Beer (the W comes from the word double) is the world's first beer to have cut the level of purine by 99% (Japanese patent No. 3720935). This is desirable because elevated levels of purine are associated with gout. The other feature of this beer (which makes 2 or a double benefit), is the presence of polyphenols from wine extract. The wine extract is also said to improve the taste.

Kirin Tanrei Beer was introduced in 1998 as Japan's first "happoshu" or 2nd category beer. Kirin is the company who did the initial research to develop a low malt beer that could be categorized as something other than a beer.
