Mister Donut San Francisco Chinatown

The second big factor in Mister Donut's success in Japan I would have to say is the "San Francisco Chinatown" or "Mister Yamucha" in Japanese menu selection. This turns a donut shop into a restaurant and the Chinese ramen and yamucha goes surprisingly well with donuts. The most important aspect of this is that parents can go to a Mister Donuts with their kids, get some real food, a donut and good coffee (with free refills). You clearly see more people enter Mister Donut shops as groups and stay longer than you would otherwise. 飲茶

Lotte Uru Up Collagen Drink

This drink is honey and ginger flavored and contains 5,000mg of collagen. As with most such drinks in Japan, the claim is made as much the product name as possible. Uru is short for Uruoi 潤い and is a word frequently used to describe good skin condition although most dictionaries usually just say moisture. Lotte Ice Cream Vending Machines

I found this somewhat unusual, but interesting. Lotte shows their two varieties of ice cream vending machine on their website, plus the varieties of ice cream that go in the machines. Not only do most companies not bother detailing what vending machines they use, but the turnover and variety of products in most Japanese vending machines usually makes detailing what products are in them next to impossible. ロッテ、自動販売機

Mister Donut Pon de Lion

Although Mister Donut originated in the US, most of that chain was absorbed by Dunkin Donuts, with only 3 locations remaining (according to Wikipedia). The Japanese chain is easily the largest and is also the largest donut chain in Japan. I think any casual observer would agree that there are at least two big factors contributing to their success here in Japan. The first is shown in this photo. A group of characters has been developed which ended up turning into a flagship donut. The pon de ring consists of a small balls baked into a donut shaped ring. Not only are they easy and fun to pull apart and eat one by one, these donuts are a little more chewy than regular donuts (not sure, but I think some rice flour is added). The website says these were modeled after a Brazilian chewy bread item called Pao de queijo or cheese buns which contain cheese for flavor and cassava starch for chewiness. This ring is also the most recognizable character in what has become a small group of characters, Pon de Lion (photo). I this is a play on words deriving from Ponce de Leon, more for the sound and for any logical connection.

Meiji Premium Frozen Pizza

To promote its new premium frozen pizzas, Meiji is giving away a Fiat 500 car which has a special design from popular TV personality Karen Michibata 道端カレン. Answering a simple quiz online is necessary for entry. Lotte Suntory Boss Collaboration

Lotte and Suntory are collaborating on coffee flavored candies to note the 20th anniversary of Boss brand can coffee. I think this multi pack that looks like a canned coffee vending machine is an interesting presentation.
