Morinaga Aloe Yogurt Strawberry Smoothie

Morinaga suggests making watermelon smoothies with their aloe yogurt. They call this "healthy beauty" based on the watermelon containing "beauty ingredients" such as lycopene, beta carotene, vitamin C and citrulline. Not really a claim that would pass even the loosest standards, but probably more healthy than not. 森永

Meiji Cup Golf Tournament

The Meiji Cup Golf Tournament will be held in Sapporo this weekend. Meiji promotes their VAAM sports drink for even moderate exercise, so that is a natural tie in, but Bulgaria yogurt, chocolate, Amino Collagen supplement and Meiji Tokachi Smart Cheese are also featured. Relatively cool Hokkaido in August sounds very attractive. It is also safely away from seasonal typhoons. 明治

Lawson Machi Cafe

Lawson, one of the big convenience store chains, is now selling fresh coffee, both hot and cold. Lawson's version is called Machi Coffee, or town coffee. Not exactly why it took so long to make it to Japan, but in the past year or so, it has become a feature at most convenience stores and has even become a new category to be measured in the industry press - called "counter coffee". Over the weekend, Lawson is selling counter coffee for 50 yen off.

Meiji Apollo Chocolate

The Meiji Apollo Chocolate brand  is celebrating 45 years this year. This chocolate look umbrella shaped with the top half being strawberry chocolate and the bottom half milk chocolate. However, the shape and name are actually a result of the launch of Apollo 11 and the first trip to the moon in the same year. This remains a product found in almost every convenience store and supermarket in Japan. 明治 アポロ

Yamazaki Lunch Pack Karuizawa Cabbage Minced Meat

A new offering in the Yamazaki Lunch Pack series features cabbage from Karuizawa in a minced meat sandwich with mayonnaise. I didn't know the Karuizawa area was known for cabbage, but it is a cool area and therefore popular for vacationing in the summer and an ideal place for dairy and food processing. This product will only be available in the Kanto area. ヤマザキ ランチパック

KFC Krushers

Kentucky Fried Chicken has 3 new Krushers flavors and they are all 100 yen off on Wednesdays. Krushers are very indulgent shakes - the taste is great but the fullness lingers a while.
Flavors: Cookie Cream, Asai Triple Berry, Kiwi Aloe, and Pineapple Citrus depressa.

7-Eleven and Evangelion

7-Eleven is holding a promotion with the Evangelion a futuristic animated series. By liking the Facebook or Twitter page you can have a chance at a larger than life size model of one of the characters. I assume kids eyes light up, while parents wonder where in the world they could find space for such a large action figure. エヴァンゲリオン

Meiji VAAM and Fat Burning

Here is a some information about the fat burning properties of VAAM, an amino acid sports drink which some studies have shown to encourage fat burning earlier in the exhaustion cycle. Athletes (including professional athletes) use it to avoid or ease the wall that occurs when glycogen runs out, but it is also it is also marketed as a fat burning drink.

This graphic takes quite a few liberties in trying to display how much of an energy reserve people have if they use body fat. The carbohydrate calculation on the left is not explained, but apparently people have about 2,000 kcal of energy available from carbohydrates. In contrast, an average person of 70 kg and 16 percent fat has 80,000 kcal of energy available. Very problematic series of assumptions. However, I know a lot of athletes, but in Japan and in other countries who absolutely swear by this sports drink. 明治
