Kirin's dairy subsidiary is now located in Tokyo, but has its roots in Iwate Prefecture, part of the earthquake and tsunami hit Tohoku region. An area of Iwate, Hiraizumi 平泉, where a very famous temple Chusonji Temple 中尊寺 is located, which in turn possesses a golden temple building 金色堂, was named a World Heritage Site several years ago. Koiwai is selling a yogurt in special gold containers to celebrate the designation of the temple as a World Heritage Site and to promote reconstruction in the area. The name of the yogurt is the same as the name of the temple building, Konjiki yogurt 金色ヨーグルト covered in gold (the photo shows the building surrounding the gold temple building). This is a variety I have tried and really liked - maybe not as an everyday item, but as an occasional treat. Tamaruya Wasabi KitKat is a collaboration between the famous wasabi seller based in Shizuoka and KitKat. These KitKat claims a harmonious flavor balance between wasabi and white chocolate ingredients. I frequently see these for sale in Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) stations. Another product in Kirin's i-Plus series is Healthy Adult Yogurt 大人が元気ヨーグルト, which contains 400 mg of ornithine オルニチン and the KW LAB probiotic strain. KW has a general intestinal condition activity and ornithine is an amino acid which Kirin has been pushing due to studies showing enhanced fatigue recovery. This combination of intestinal health and fatigue recovery are considered to be more appealing to adults (and by extension the elderly). This KitKat is sold exclusively in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions and supposedly uses citrus fruits from the same regions. The flavor is a balance of Onshu Mikan, Lemon and Sudachi citrus fruits (温州みかん, レモン, すだち). Sudachi is a special Japanese citrus variety and Onshu Mikan is a variety of mikan named after a city in China. This variety might have originally been mistaken as having been derived from China, but DNA evidence shows that it actually originates from Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan instead. Kirin is collaborating with its dairy product subsidiary, Koiwai, to produce a probiotic which is effective in inhibiting the spread of the flu. The product is called probiotic strain and the product are called Plasma Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), which is a not too subtle nod to the effect they are promoting which cannot be claimed on the package. (It cannot be claimed because there is not a category in the Japanese functional food claim system, FOSHU or Tokuho, for immune function.) Kirin has presented data that this probiotic stimulates plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and thus immune function.
This product with its proposed function and red packaging appears to take direct aim at Meiji's R-1 product which was extremely popular during last year's flu season and also has a red label.
Another innovation noted is the shape of the container which is said to be easy to handle and is designed to appeal to women.
